The Lime Art and Design Curriculum inspires creativity amongst all learners. As a Trust, Kapow is used to deliver Art lessons of the highest quality, providing step by step instructional videos to support the delivery and enhance the skills of the learners. The Art curriculum is designed and sequenced to engage, inspire and challenge pupils. It equips them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Through the implementation of the Lime Art curriculum, pupils will learn about, research and discover the work of a wide range of artists. They will also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
The Kapow Art scheme of work is designed with four strands that run throughout. These are:
- Making skills
- Formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
- Knowledge of artists
- Evaluating
In Early Years, the curriculum provides opportunities for experimentation with colour, design, texture form and function. The development of learner's artistic cultural awareness supports their imaginative and creativity in wider areas of the curriculum such as writing, reading, communicating and performance. Understanding, self-expression and vocabulary are developed to enable communication through the arts through indoor and outdoor observation, exploration and response to the world around them. Seeing artists live at work actively promotes and inspires creativity and expression whilst building an understanding of the technical skills that can be applied to compose their own masterpieces in a range of media and materials.
In Key stage 1, children develop their knowledge and skills across four key areas: Drawing, Painting and mixed media, Sculpture and 3D and Craft and design. Lessons build on their experiences in EYFS, introducing new techniques, a focus on developing their own ideas and increased opportunities to reflect on their own work whilst learning about a range of artists.
In Lower Key stage 2, children continue to build on the skills previously taught. Through the formal elements of Art unit, children will develop drawing skills by drawing from direct observation, which will progress to drawing still life from observation and for mark making. Children will also develop their design, drawing, craft and painting skills.
In Upper Key Stage 2, pupils develop the complexity of the skills taught previously by developing their drawing from observation and select and mix more complex colours. Children will also learn and apply new drawing techniques such as negative drawing, chiaroscuro, expression, sketching and still life.
The expected impact the Kapow Primary Art and design scheme of work is that children will:
- Produce creative work, exploring and recording their ideas and experiences.
- Be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using subject-specific language.
- Know about great artists and the historical and cultural development of their art.
- Meet the end of key stage expectations outlined in the National curriculum for Art and design.
Retrieval is a vital component of the curriculum sequencing. Prior learning is drawn upon, wherever the content is taught.
The Lime Art and Design Curriculum, enhanced by Kapow, ensures specific and associated subject vocabulary is planned sequentially and cumulatively from Year 1 to 6. High frequency, multiple meaning words (Tier 2) are explicitly taught alongside and help make sense of subject specific words (Tier 3).
The learning modules for each year group are enhanced and supported by detailed Knowledge Organisers. Quizzes for each module, along with Knowledge Catchers, provide vital opportunities for retrieval and assessment.
